GREAT MOUNTAIN ROAD TO ACCOMMODATE ONE LANE TRAFFIC AS CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES

Beginning, Monday 22 February, the Great Mountain Road will be open to accommodate one lane traffic as critical road rehabilitation works continue.

The partial opening will facilitate an ease in access to upper Great Mountain and the Road Town areas.  Motorists are reminded that this is still an active construction site and works will continue for the next few weeks until the project is completed.

Delays are expected as the traffic will be slow moving.  Temporary road closures will also be scheduled throughout the coming weeks to facilitate essential concrete works.  Motorists are asked to traverse this area with extreme caution and pay attention to traffic signs and directions from the traffic wardens.  The use of alternate routes is strongly encouraged.  Heavy Equipment Operators including truck drivers are especially asked not to traverse this area until a two-lane carriageway is available as the current access is narrow.

Alternate Routes:

  • Traffic coming from upper Great Mountain, Brewer’s Bay and Spooner’s Estate can turn left onto the ridge road and head into Road Town via the exit for Johnson’s Ghut/Purcell or continue to Belle Vue and head down Fort Hill into Road Town. Alternately, motorists can access Road Town via Joe’s Hill.
  • Similarly, motorists heading out of Road Town are advised to access Upper Great Mountain and the surrounding areas via Joe’s Hill, Purcell/Johnson’s Ghut Road or the Fort Hill, Belle Vue Road.
  • Traffic coming from Cane Garden and Carrot Bay through Windy Hill will be alerted at the Ridge Road and at again at the Joe’s Hill intersection about the Great Mountain road closure and will be diverted as necessary onto Joe’s Hill Road.

The Ministry of Transportation, Works and Utilities and the Recovery and Development Agency would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as critical road rehabilitation works take place throughout the Territory.  Persons are asked to stay tuned to media outlets, social media, the radio.  Residents may also access both the RDA and Government’s Facebook pages at username @rdabvi and @BVIGovernment for the latest traffic advisory information.
