BACKGROUND
Hurricane damage to the Government’s Very High Frequency (VHF) radio network has left the Virgin Islands emergency, security and disaster management response services with patchy coverage and a system that is weak and vulnerable to disasters.
The police, emergency services, disaster response and security agencies in the Virgin Islands need a robust, secure VHF radio system that is independent of cellular service and does not depend on private enterprise’s communication systems, to ensure universal and resilient coverage, to ensure the safety and security of citizens can always be protected.

Activity
The RDA has been working on the planning and design of a new VHF trunking network. A technical assessment has been conducted and recommendations made, based on consultations with the following users: Department of Disaster Management, RVIPF, Customs, Immigration, Port Authority, Airport Authority, HM Prison Service, 911 emergency services and relevant ministries. The project
will proceed to the construction phase once funding is confirmed. This will include installation of repeaters, provision of handsets and staff training.
Result
A modern radio communications system that is resilient to hurricanes and has universal coverage within the Virgin Islands on land and at sea. This will improve the capacity of government agencies to respond to emergencies and disasters, as well as conducting security operations.
