Special Debris Clearance
The Special Debris Clearance Project was started in August to support the DWM to clear hurricane debris ahead of the peak hurricane season. To date a total of 500 lorry loads of debris has been taken to Pockwood Pond weighing approximately 1,200 tonnes. The remaining package yet to be completed is the collection and processing of approximately 500 derelict vehicles from Virgin Gorda. The DWM is now continuing with this programme directly whilst the RDA focuses on the longer-term solutions to effective and sustainable waste management. This programme is having an immense impact on all sectors of tourism as it is resulting in rapid improvements to the beauty of the islands, with the removal of the constant reminders of the hurricane disasters that the hurricane debris posed.
The Special Debris Clearance project undertaken by the RDA in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Development’s Department of Waste Management has almost been completed. The remaining activity to be completed in the coming weeks is the collection and removal of the derelict vehicles on Virgin Gorda.
