Immigration Detention Centre
STATUS: PLANNING
Ministry Partner: Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development, and Digital Transformation
Project Number: 196
Project Start Date: June 2023
Projected End Date: April 2029
Duration: 43 months
Funding Source: Government of the Virgin Islands
BACKGROUND
The Immigration Department plays a vital role in maintaining the security of the Virgin Islands (VI) by overseeing a balanced and effective immigration control system. This system ensures the regulation and facilitation of movement across BVI borders while upholding fair and sound decision-making in the execution of its responsibilities.
Under the Premier’s Office, the Department established a Detention Centre in May 2008, located at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut. In 2010, the Centre was transferred to Her Majesty’s Prison to alleviate overcrowding issues within the facility at that time. Unfortunately, this transition left the Immigration Department without a suitable detention space for illegal immigrants and individuals who have been Refused Permission to Land (RPL). As a result, the Department continues to face a significant financial strain.
Activity
This new facility should host the following:
• Immigration Detention
• Bunker
• Border Management System Disaster Recovery Site
Result
This new facility will enhance the management of immigration cases, safeguard public safety, and protect the integrity of our borders, all while respecting the dignity and rights of individuals.
