Following the devastating impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, approximately 200 derelict vessels were identified for removal from various locations across the Virgin Islands. These vessels, many of which were left abandoned in safe anchorages and hurricane holes, have posed ongoing environmental and navigational concerns.
In response, the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry—now the Virgin Islands Shipping and Maritime Authority (VISMA)—undertook auctions of several vessels between 2018 and 2019. Concurrently, insurance companies facilitated the liquidation of numerous others. Detailed records, including vessel names and the status of disposals, have been maintained by VISMA throughout the process.
Despite these efforts, derelict boats have continued to litter the territory’s shorelines for the past five years. Their removal remains a priority to restore safe access for vessels during hurricane season and to support the wider clean-up and beautification of the islands. This initiative is essential not only for maritime safety but also for enhancing the territory’s appeal as a tourism destination.
