Funding Source: Government of the Virgin Islands and Unite BVI
BACKGROUND
The Jost Van Dyke Primary School sustained significant damage during the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017. The hurricanes destroyed the existing buildings rendering them completely unusable. Sections of the buildings were repaired to accommodate the school with donor funding. The pre-existing school accommodations were located in the Bay of Great Harbour, within close proximity to the sea environs and were also located in a flood-prone area adjacent to a mangrove pond. This placed it at risk from severe weather events and storm surge and limited the scale of development that could occur on the site.
It was definitively acknowledged and accepted that the facility, due to its age, size, and considerable monthly expenditure to upkeep its semi-functionality, could be no longer be utilized. The Government of the Virgin Islands through the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports was desirous of reconstructing the Jost Van Dyke Primary School. Following community input, a decision was made to construct the new school at an elevated position to eliminate the flooding experienced in its original location.
