BACKGROUND
The Water and Sewerage Department is the government agency responsible for the management and provision of water and sewerage services in the Territory. Established in 1972, the department plays a crucial role in ensuring access to clean and safe water, as well as proper sanitation facilities for residents and visitors.
For some time, the Water and Sewerage Department has operated with many shortcomings relative to the ‘day-to-day’ operations of the utility, which has caused challenges and shortfalls that negatively affect the Department. The lack of adequate infrastructure and not having access to other critical resources has largely resulted in the Department’s inefficiency to provide a consistent water supply and good quality potable water.
Activity
1. Leak Detection: This component entails engaging external specialists to detect leaks in critical areas within Greater Road Town, with a focus on the main distribution lines. As a capacity-building initiative, this exercise aims to strengthen the capabilities of the Water and Sewage Department (W&SD) alongside private sector professionals, while also preparing for the anticipated retirement of many W&SD staff members.
The activity scope includes:
Greater Road Town: Extending from Prospect Reef roundabout to the bottom of Jean Hill, covering:
o Lower Estate
o Huntum’s Ghut
o Purcell
o Baugher’s Bay
Participants will develop valuable leak detection skills and gain access to necessary equipment, which will remain with W&SD to support ongoing detection efforts.
2. Leak Remediation: This activity involves repairing leaks identified during the leak detection phase.
3. Reservoir Metering:
November – March tbc
This activity includes the purchase and installation of meters for the monitoring of the main reservoirs around the territory to ensure that the department is able to manage and monitor the water transmission system. This will facilitate an improvement of the management of water production contracts. The main metering locations will be:
a. Long Bush*
b. Hannah Hill
c. Carrot Bay*
d. Zion Hill*
e. Sabbath Hill
f. Balsam Ghut
g. Maya Cove
h. Forte Hill
i. Minton Hill-VG
j. Perrot Hill-VG
k. Johnny Hill-JVD
